Banned Books at CSU Library

Censorship suppresses free thought: Exercise your freedom to read

The CSU student chapter for the Society of Professional Journalists and Cleveland State University Michael Schwartz Library are joining forces to celebrate the freedom of speech. A Banned Books / Banned Ideas Reading will be held Tuesday, September 29 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM on the 1st floor of Michael Schwartz Library.

Books are banned for a variety of reasons by many different groups. This book, 120 banned books : censorship histories of world literature, has a list of books that have been censored or banned over the years and tells the story of their censorship. The American Library Association lists frequently challenged books on their website. A list of the top 100 most frequently challenged books from 2000-2007 is available from the Office for Intellectual Freedom at ALA. Peruse these lists to see if your favorite book has been banned during any point in history.

Also, view a map of Book bans and challenges, 2007-2009 in the United States.

Here is a partial list of some of the banned or frequently challenged books available at CSU Library. Click on the link to see if they're available to check out.
